Wolf Tattoos - 5 Great Wolf Tattoo Designs to Choose From For Your Next Tattoo

Wolf tattoos are a great look but there are many different wolf tattoo designs to choose from. Which variation of this mythological beast should you get? And what do wolf tattoos mean anyway? In this article, I'll explain their meaning and then tell you about 5 different variations you can choose from for your next tattoo.

Wolf Tattoo Meanings

The wolf is a creature of great mythological status. Although it is universally feared, it is also highly respected. Man's best friend descended from wolves and, within the pack, they show great courage and loyalty - both admirable qualities despite this animal's ferocity.

Are these tattoos for women or for men? Frankly, they are not gender specific. If you like it then I say you should go for it, regardless of what some people may think. Society as a whole, however, does not really judge a tattoo of a wolf to be either male or female.

Howling Wolf Tattoos

One of the most popular wolf types of tattoo is the howling tattoo of the wolf. The wolf is featured looking up and to the left or the right in order to best project his message. In this pose, usually only the wolf's head appears in the tattoo. Sometimes though, the entire body may be present, especially if the rest of the tattoo depicts scenery or environment such as a full moon.

Wolf Tattoo - New Moon

This is a tattoo that has emerged thanks to the TV series Twilight. This tattoo is probably only for fans of the show. Even if you like it, people may assume you are a fan which could be annoying if you are not!

Anyway, the tattoo is still quite cool, nevertheless. It looks like a tribal style drawing in black ink. The wolf is enclosed in a circle and, at first glance, most people do not even notice it!

Wolf Tattoos - Tribal

There are many tribal variations of wolf inkwork that you can get done. They are popular with both men and women. For women especially who do not want the usual fierce look of a wolf tattoo, the tribal version is a good choice.

The tribal versions of a this tattoo type come in many different poses. Some show the wolf in its typical howling headshot but others show the wolf in action, leaping, running or fighting. In my experience, there are many more tribal variations than non-tribal ones.

Celtic Wolf Tattoos

These are quite hard to come across. If you want a tat in this style and you are not willing to compromise then I recommend finding a good artist with plenty of experience doing tattoos in the Celtic style. You should also consider tribal styles because there is not much of a difference.

Werewolf Tattoos

These tattoos have a totally different meaning to most tattoos of wolves. The werewolf represents the biological connection between man and wolf. You will find it very hard to find any tattoo flash for this type of wolf because not many people desire such a tattoo. You are better off finding a really good artist and showing him or her some pictures and together deciding the best direction to go with your tattoo.

The Growing Interest in Dragon Tattoo Designs

Dragon tattoos are extremely popular, regardless of age or gender. Dragons have been a part of mythology in several cultures, and they have had various meanings and roles.

Dragon Art Tattoos

Because of the differences between cultures and beliefs, dragon tattoos can have many different meanings. The dragon can be fierce, elegant, beautiful, or even cute, based on the cultural depiction that you choose. With a small amount of creativity, your dragon tattoo design can be an original and unique work of art, as well.

Dragon mythologies are often as different as the cultures that possess them. For example, European dragon lore is full of knights hunting and slaying the fire breathing beasts that stole gold, kidnapped young girls, and destroyed livestock and homes. In contrast, Asian cultures depict a much different image, with wise old dragons who were able to make prophecies that helped the people of the area live better, and stay safe. These creatures were revered as gods, and were asked for help when needed. Even in the Middle East, dragon mythology can be found, though these tales are mostly based on the large lizards that live in the area. Regardless of the culture, stories of dragons have been passed down for generations. Most of these tales have unknown origins, but the stories remain very popular.

In many cases, as with Celtic dragon tattoos, dragon tattoo designs show a large reptilian creature with the features of a lizard. More detailed tattoos will even show individual scales on the dragon's skin. Some even possess a forked tongue, a common reptilian feature. Many dragons are shown flying, or with their bat-like wings stretched out, and breathing fire. These common elements are all part of the European depiction of a dragon, which is how our culture generally envisions them.

Dragon tattoos can mean something different to each person. Usually, this meaning can be shown in the way that a dragon is depicted. If the dragon is meant to express strength, the image will usually show a very large, fierce dragon with massive wings. These dragons are usually breathing fire, either to the side, or directly at the person viewing the tattoo. If the dragon is supposed to show wisdom and intelligence, the dragon is often shown smiling or thoughtful. The most common depiction of this would be Chinese dragon tattoos. With images such as these, the dragon is often designed to appear old and weathered to express wisdom. Some are even shown with long, gray beards or moustaches.

Dragon tattoos can represent a variety of emotions and ideals, such as good, evil, wisdom, adventure, mischief, strength, and bravery. The key is to choose an image that represents you the best. Dragon tattoo designs can be any color. Men often choose red or green, while women often choose purple, blue, or pink. However, the color choice is up to you, and that will make your dragon tattoo as unique as you are.

Nautical Star Tattoos - The Original Meaning

Nautical star tattoos have caused much controversy and heated discussion regarding the true meaning of the design. Over the years, many groups have attempted to tag the design with their own unique interpretation. In addition to the nautical connection, this popular tattoo design has been connected to the military, punk rockers, the lesbian community and the anti-racism movement in recent years.

But what are the origins of the nautical star tattoo? Where did it come from and what did it originally represent?

Almost everybody, without exception, accepts that sailors were the first group of people to wear nautical star tattoos.

In previous centuries, working at sea was a very dangerous and unpredicatable way of life. Sailors had very little to guide them at night, apart from the stars. And the one that they relied upon most was Polaris, or the North Star. As this star is positioned close to the north pole, it appears to be stationary at all times, unlike other stars which appear to move as time passes. This provided early sailors with a fixed reference point. And once they know where the North Star was, they could position their ships accordingly and be reasonably confident that they were going in the right direction.

Over time the North Star became a symbol for finding your way home safely and symbolically finding your way in life. But beyond that, as many sailors were deeply superstitious with a rich history of lore about life and death at sea, they were always looking for lucky charms. So many sailors began to place nautical star tattoos on their forearms or hands as a symbol of good luck and a desire to get home safely.

Skip forward through the centuries and the meaning of the nautical star tattoo has become broader. Not only is it a symbol of the sea, but also a sign of security and guidance for all sailors and travelers. It has also become a sign of following your dreams and achieving success in your life.

However, these is some disagreement concerning the design of the nautical star. Most people accept that the basic design of the nautical star is a five pointed star. But a minority of people claim that the nautical star represents the traditional design of a ship's compass. This consists of the four cardinal directions, North, South, East, West, and possibly the intermediate directions of North East, South East, South West and North West. So their idea of the nautical star is a four pointed design or even an eight pointed star.

Personally, I think that the five pointed star best represents the design of the nautical star tattoo, especially when you consider that on many nautical maps, north is shown by a compass style five pointed star.

But whatever style of design is selected, one thing is clear; the nautical star has had a long connection with naval tradition and was originally a symbol of finding your way home safely. And while other groups may attempt to link themselves to the use of the nautical star tattoo, the sailors of bygone centuries will always retain the distinction of representing the original interpretation of this iconic tattoo design.

Tattoo - A History of Body Markings

One wonders about the beginning of tattoo when the canvass on which is it painted on is the human skin, which easily disintegrates once lifeless. Thanks to the mummification practice of earlier civilizations, the beginning of body markings was ascertained and we now have a clearer idea of when and how tattooing started.

Mummies have been found from Nubia in Africa to Peru in South America, Siberia and Polynesia. These mummies became famous not only because of the discovery of their tattoos but that of the surrounding circumstance where they were found.

The most known tattooed mummy was the bronze man nicknamed Otzi. The name was given due to icy region where he was discovered. It was ascertained that Otzi lived sometime 3300 b.c.e. The material that covered his body showed clearly the presence of dark blue tattoos placed many times in different areas of Otzi. There were symmetrical lines which were grouped and situated in the lumbar region and his ankles.
Otzi even had a cross marking on the inside of his knees.

Even with the discovery of the practice of tattoo as starting in the ancient times, little has been known about the reason why there was even a practice like body markings. It can only be intimated that the practice of tattooing stems from a religious belief or as a social tradition to identify classes or castes or they could even be medicinal in nature. Whatever the reason, another discovery that of Amunet said to be a priestess at Thebes also showed the same symmetrical dot lines at her upper arms. However, the concentration of the symmetrical dot lines were found in her abdomen below her navel in rounded lines.

During the Iron age, several spectacular discoveries were also unearthed. These tattooed mummies are from the tribe or culture called Pazyryk or wandering horsemen. These gypsies were hunters and warriors in the plain region of Siberia. One mummy worthy of mention is that who was merely known as the chief. There was an abundance of grave goods found alongside his body. The tattoos found in his body includes that of large animals as well as those of domesticated type. The tattoos were located mostly in his spine which is reminiscent of that of Otzi. Still belonging to the same culture was the mummy of a young woman having similar designs as that of the chief.

Whatever the symbolism, it is apparent that tattoos started out as just as collection of dots and lines that have progressed to grander designs in the current times.

Traditional color rose-Tribal Tattoo Vs Traditional Tattoo

Here are a few things to consider when choosing between a tribal tattoo and a traditional tattoo:

1. If you are looking for meaning or symbolism, you can find them in both styles. Traditional tattoos, have a long history and meaning behind them. Researching various tribes and the origin of tribal tattoos, you can also discover they hold meaning and symbolism as well.

2. Beware of trendy tattoos. Tribal tats have become the current craze over recent years. You see them everywhere now, and it's entered into "trendy territory". Jumping on these kind of bandwagons are always dangerous. Many people have chosen this style because they think they "look cool", when really it's just a reflection of what society has currently deemed to be "cool".

If you rely on trends to make decisions you set yourself up for regret years later when the trend wears off and it's now seen as old, generic, and lame. An example of this can be seen in the chain link or barb wire design which many guys got around their bicep some years back. That became a big trend for a few years, but then quickly fizzled into a generic, played out design which has virtually died and lost its onetime so called ''coolness''.

3. Traditional tattoo's have stood the test of time. Many of these old school tats, be it a colorful traditional tiger or a classic nautical star, have stood up solidly for years. They have always had a steady and strong following, and many big time tattoo enthusiasts still will go for traditional designs. Traditional tats have remained strong and consistent, making them a great choice.

Whichever style you choose, you should ultimately go with your own personal preference and find the design which truly speaks to you.

Getting a rose tattoo is cool. Aside from the fact that roses are among the most exquisite, beautiful, interesting and popular tattoo designs, it would be thrilling to know that roses are rich in symbolism. Whether the tattoo is a big one or a small one, for sure, a rose would always be an eye catcher. Men and women both prefer to have rose tattoos. It is interesting to note that despite its floral and feminine nature, the rose tattoo design is popular among men. Take note that men wearing rose tattoos do not have to be gay. A great number of straight guys also decide to have a rose marked on their skin.

Among the most usual and logical reasons why roses are popular is its overall beautiful and interesting design. Roses are interesting flowers, and as such are always good to look at. Rose tattoos often come with colorful color schemes. There may be hues and shades of read and some green parts. The tattoo design is so colorful and is almost always artistically done and implemented. The tattoo is also fun to look at and is often taken as a personal symbolism. Roses for tattoo fanatics mean liveliness and eagerness for specific life factors. The traditional symbolism is love and devotion, though now those symbolisms are becoming negligible.

A tattoo design can easily be personalized. Often, you can see rose tattoos bearing personal names. Men would readily have the names of their wives or girlfriends embossed and integrated in a rose design. The tattoo design itself, without any letters or names, is a sufficient symbolism and representation itself of romance and love. Thus, it is easy and logical to infer that a person getting a rose tattoo is romantically inclined and is a believer of the power of love.

Most of all, rose tattoos are among the most popular. You know how people would always be prepared to jump into bandwagons. The examples set by celebrities and icons also further bolster the popularity of the tattoo design. A rose is hardly related to femininity despite its floral nature. Thus, people still see a sense of mystery for reasons why people would prefer to get the simple, yet attractive rose tattoos on their skin. If you aim to get a tattoo now, consider having a rose design made and find out for yourself why such a choice is always satisfying.

Pin Up Girl Tattoos - Guide to Choosing a Design

So you're looking for pin up girl tattoos? They're something else, that's for sure. These tattoos are an expression of the beauty of females. I really like these kind of tattoos, as it's far from generic. Read on to learn more about these tattoos, and where to find the best designs.

It's much more common to get cartoon like illustrations instead of tattoos that depict real girls. These illustrations are often of a nice looking woman with exaggerated proportions posing in various positions. You can make these more interesting by using a certain theme for your pin up girl. Popular choices are devil girls, angels, or warrior-princesses.

The other style of pin up girl tattoos are tattoos of real life women. These are often famous models or celebrity sex symbols. The most famous pin up girl would have to be Betty Grable, while the new pin up queen is arguably Dita Von Teese.

In the more modern style the girl is either half-naked or completely naked. When deciding what type of tattoo you want it's important to think about future jobs, since formal environments don't always take a liking to tattoos that are easily seen, certainly not of naked women.

Today there are so many designs to choose from, and the internet has made deciding what tattoo you want that much easier. Before getting your tattoo done, it's therefore highly recommended to join a good website where you can explore tattoo galleries to find out what design suites you best.
